Job Description: Licensed Veterinary Doctor. Vieques Humane Society (VHS) is seeking a dedicated and passionate veterinarian to join their small team and make a significant impact in a community with limited veterinary services. VHS is the island’s only open-admission shelter and low-cost community veterinary clinic. This position offers the opportunity to work in a tropical paradise with a close-knit local community and a large animal presence.
Key Responsibilities:
• Perform routine surgeries such as spay/neuter and other necessary procedures for shelter and owned animals.
• Participate in high-volume spay-a-thons and free vaccine clinics.
• Provide wellness exams, vaccinations, and medical treatments for both shelter and owned animals.
• Diagnose and treat both routine and emergency medical cases, including advanced surgeries and aftercare.
• Maintain thorough electronic medical records for all cases.
• Educate clients and staff on animal care and wellness.
• Interact with clients in an empathetic and professional manner.
• Provide emergency services, including after-hours care as needed.
Qualifications:
• Experience in general veterinary practice, including surgery and medical treatments.
• Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
• Compassionate, team-oriented individual who thrives in a fast-paced work environment.
• A strong desire to work in a small community with a focus on animal welfare.
Team and Services Information: VHS’s clinic is equipped with surgery equipment, dental machine, ultrasound machine and X-ray machine, allowing for comprehensive diagnostic capabilities. We also partner with Antech for laboratory services to support advanced diagnostic testing.
Currently, the clinic team includes a veterinary technician who works from Tuesday to Saturday, providing care for shelter animals and walk-in clients and our Medical Director working Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Relief/Contract Work Opportunities: We are also open to relief or contract veterinarians, including those available for as little as one day per month or on an occasional basis. This flexibility can offer opportunities for those who may not be able to commit to a full-time or part-time role but are still interested in contributing to our mission.
Why Vieques? Vieques is a wonderful place to live, work, and play, known for its beautiful beaches, year-round warm weather, and vibrant mix of cultures. The island is home to a passionate community of animal lovers, and as a veterinarian at Vieques Humane Society, you’ll quickly become an extended part of those families. This position offers the chance to make a real difference in the lives of animals and their families in an underserved area.
